How to find the best water shoes

A pair of flip flops or sneakers isn’t practical when you plan kayaking in the sea, even though a footwear is a necessity. If you take part in water sport activities whether for fun or as a profession, you need to invest in good water shoes.  Unlike sneakers or other types of footwear, water shoes are specifically designed for water and are sturdy and temperature appropriate.

If you are in the market already trying to find one, that’s a good move. But the market is flooded with so many types and brands such that without a proper guide, you won’t be able to find the most appropriate for you.

How to choose the best

When searching for a water shoe, there are a number of things you need to look into.

  • Toe guard feature

This is a basic feature for any standard water shoes and it is what marks the boundary with the typical summer shoes. Quite a number of brands do not have toe guard, so beware before you make a purchase.

  • Something different form leather

If you are an enthusiast of leather shoes, this is the part where you let go. Water shoes made of leather absorb water making them heavier and also make your feet too chilly. Additionally, continuous immersion into water and out will eventually tear down the leather.

  • Look out for thick sole

This is somewhat the most forgotten feature. Any water shoes should have a thick sole, not a 3mm thickness. Thickness protects your feet when you step on sharp edged rocks and will improve your traction capabilities.

Popular brands

Perhaps a few brands known with the mentioned features can narrow your search.  Some well-known brands include Vibram, Keen and Teva.
